Tipping Etiquette in the UK

Tipping is customary but not legally required in the UK. Unlike the US where tipping is near-mandatory, UK tipping is more discretionary and based on the quality of service received.

Standard UK Tip Amounts

Restaurants: 10-15% for table service; 12.5% is often automatically added in London restaurants. Always check if a service charge has already been added before tipping further. Taxis: Rounding up to the nearest pound or 10-15% for good service. Hotels: £1-2 per bag for porters; £3-5/night for housekeeping on extended stays is appreciated but not expected.

Service Charges

Since October 2024, new UK legislation requires that all tips, gratuities, and service charges go directly to workers. Employers are no longer allowed to keep any part of tips. If you see a discretionary service charge, you are entitled to remove it if service was unsatisfactory.
